NIGERIANS ARE THE BIGGEST HATERS OF GOOD MUSIC, AND HERE'S WHY

By: Minister Sam (Music Journalist, Critic and Pop Culture Enthusiast)

People listen to music for different reasons. Some, to battle depression; release tension; others, to get entertained, relax and be inspired. But the average Nigerian listens to music for just four reasons: to dance, dance, feel good...and dance again. Sigh.

I got into a conversation (sorry, argument) with a stranger when I took an evening stroll to get 'Akara and Potatoes' (winks) yesterday. That encounter inspired this piece. I overheard him telling this other guy he came with, how much he despised Nigerian music for being trashy, and poor in lyrics, yet claiming he couldn't do without them because they made him dance and happy, seeing that the current economic situation was enough to drown his entire family into the deepest abyss of depression.

What even shocked me the most were the words that followed after I interrupted, and asked that he clarified himself. In his exact words; "Bros, bros...no be say them Brymo and Cobhams no good oh, but their music go just make me sad. They kon even slow on top." How ironic. The gospel truth about this young man's revelation (pun intended) is that 70% of Nigerian music lovers can relate to, and actually agree with him.

If you belong to this class, then you're a hypocrite. Yes, you! You're a hypocrite! How can you deliberately hate on good music, downplaying them as boring and sorrowful, while glorifying songs with hard-hitting beats and monotonic lyrics (about sex, booze and partying) as uplifting? Yet, still go back and troll these hard-working mainstream artistes (Wizkid, Davido, Tekno and the likes) on social media as being too shallow, just after dancing to their songs at the club? Sad.

The only reason why Soul, Alternative and R'n'B artistes don't 'blow' (Pardon my French), is that we Nigerians don't support them enough. If you think you do, put yourself to this test: When last did you buy Brymo or Timi Dakolo's album? Or request Odunsi or Nonso Amadi's songs on the radio (I doubt you even know who these guys are)? Or attend the last Asa concert?

Deep down, somewhere in our hearts, we know they make some of the best music in the country, but still avoid them, like Wizkid did to Eva's fiance at the 2016 Headies. I crave for a Nigerian music industry where Bez and Frank Edwards get nominated alongside Burna Boy and Adekunle Gold for Artiste of The Year; and Tay Iwar headlines the well attended Gidi Fest Annual Concert! What do you crave for?
