Weak Institutions and Policies are Nigeria's Biggest Problems

Nigeria cannot make development happen, because it's institutions are not functioning. The institutions have lost its focus and values, these were the words of Dr. Tunji Olaopa, retired permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Communication Technology.
Institution here refers to all sectors that directly or indirectly affects Nigeria. The legislature, executive, judiciary, finance, education, politics and other sectors. Weak institutions refers to a governing body, or a government sector that is handicapped, one over weighed by pressure and lacks foresight. Institutions that are dependent and easily swayed.
Yes! Policies are made for fancy,  policies on education, agriculture or governance, which of them have made impact? Government would rather have it on paper or broadcast than implementing it. Even  the policy makers work for selfish interest.
Professor Pat Utomi has said that, "we keep repeating our past experiences because our institutions are weak".
Take a good look at Nigeria legislature, it should be one of the key institutions in a democratic system that plays a critical role in promoting fair governance. They have the right to ensure that the government is by the people and for the people. And in turn make and implement laws, policies and projects in the best interest of the people not for selfish or pressured interest. It's the same for other sectors, they have lost their functions or do not know
This reform would only be possible if everyone of us Nigerians starts seeing this country as a 'personal burden' rather than 'government business'. If everyone of us will do the right thing and remember that every decision made has its consequence
